Define Your Duramax Generation and Fuel System

Before selecting components, identify your engine model year and Duramax generation. GM fuel systems vary significantly by application. The 2001–2004 LB7, 2004.5–2005 LLY, 2006–2007 LBZ, and 2007.5–2010 LMM use Bosch CP3 high-pressure common-rail systems. The 2011–2016 LML uses a Bosch CP4.2 pump, while the 2017+ L5P uses a Denso high-pressure fuel system.

Establish Your Horsepower and Performance Goals

Determine whether you need direct stock replacements for dependable towing and daily driving or increased-flow components to support performance modifications. Stock-calibrated components restore factory fuel delivery and drivability, while performance injectors and upgraded pumps provide the additional fuel volume required for larger turbochargers, aggressive tuning, or higher horsepower targets.

Match Injection-Pump Capacity to Injector Flow

Your high-pressure injection pump must be capable of supplying the fuel volume demanded by your injectors. Larger injectors may require an upgraded pump or dual-pump system to maintain commanded rail pressure under heavy load. Properly matching these components helps prevent rail-pressure drops, poor atomization, excessive exhaust gas temperatures, and reduced performance.

Address Known Fuel-System Failure Points

Certain Duramax applications, particularly the 2011–2016 LML, may benefit from upgrades designed to address known CP4-related reliability concerns. Choose components appropriate for your engine generation and carefully consider how pump conversions or other modifications could affect installation requirements, tuning, warranty coverage, and emissions compliance.

Verify Emissions and Street-Legal Compliance

Confirm that every component is approved for your intended application. Check product documentation for emissions compliance and CARB Executive Order status where required to ensure the completed fuel system remains legal for street use.
